Unhook Review: Keep YouTube, Remove the Rabbit Hole
Unhook strips recommendations, the sidebar and Shorts out of YouTube so a video you searched for stays a video you searched for.
Best for
Keeping YouTube useful when you genuinely need it for work or learning.
Skip it if
You do not need YouTube at all. Blocking it outright is simpler and free in any blocker.

What it actually does
Unhook is a browser extension that removes YouTube's recommendation machinery. It describes itself as blocking suggestion feeds, comments and more, letting you "watch YouTube free of distractions."
The reason this deserves a tool at all is that YouTube is a genuine two-sided problem. Plenty of people need it — documentation, tutorials, lectures, repairs — so a blanket block is not realistic. But the design that makes it useful and the design that makes it a trap are the same recommendation engine.
Unhook separates them. Search still works, subscriptions still work, the video you came for still plays. What disappears is the machinery whose job is to produce the next video before you have finished this one.
How hard it is to escape
Soft. It is a browser extension and disabling it takes two clicks — it is not a commitment device and does not claim to be.
The point is not enforcement. It is that the pull mechanism is gone by default, so watching one video and stopping becomes the path of least resistance rather than an act of will.
What it costs
Unhook offers a free tier. The page does not enumerate paid pricing in a form we can quote reliably, so this profile does not state a figure — check the extension listing for current details.
It is available for Chrome, Firefox and Edge.
Where it falls down
**Desktop browser only.** It does nothing on the YouTube mobile app, which is where a great deal of YouTube watching actually happens. This is the significant limitation and it is easy to miss: cleaning up desktop YouTube while the phone app stays untouched relocates the habit rather than ending it.
**It is trivially disabled**, so it will not help someone actively looking for a way around it.
**It also does not touch the algorithm itself** — only its display. Your recommendations continue accumulating; you simply stop seeing them.
Who it suits
Someone who uses YouTube for real work and loses hours to the sidebar anyway. Pair it with something on the phone, or the habit simply moves — News Feed Eradicator does a similar job on social feeds if the same pattern shows up there.
Common questions

No. It is a desktop browser extension, so the mobile app is unaffected — which is a real limitation given how much viewing happens there.
Is Unhook free?
There is a free tier. Check the extension listing for current paid pricing.
