How to Study Without Getting Distracted by Your Phone
Put your phone in another room. Every study-tips article says it, usually citing the same experiment, usually describing it as settled.
It is not settled. And the reason it is not settled changes what you should actually do.
The famous study, and what happened to it
In 2017, Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos published "Brain Drain" in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research. The claim was striking: the mere presence of your own smartphone, face down and silenced and untouched, consumes cognitive capacity. Participants with phones in another room outperformed those with phones on the desk.
It is one of the most cited findings in this entire subject. It launched a thousand blog posts, including most of the ones ranking above this page.
Then people tried to reproduce it.
A 2022 replication in Acta Psychologica re-ran the design and found nothing. Since then, two meta-analyses have tried to settle it, and they do not agree.
A meta-analysis in Media Psychology, pooling 56 studies and 7,093 participants, found only one statistically significant result across six cognitive domains tested: working memory. Everything else — attention, fluid intelligence, the rest — came back null. The authors called this "limited support" for a smaller-than-advertised effect, and flagged poor statistical power across the underlying studies.
A separate meta-analysis in Behavioral Sciences, pooling 22 studies and 43 effects, reached the opposite headline: a significant overall negative effect of smartphone presence on cognitive performance.
So the two meta-analyses that exist do not agree with each other, which is itself the honest summary. The larger one, with six times the studies, found evidence for barely more than a working-memory effect. The smaller one found a broad effect. Both are peer-reviewed, both flagged real limitations in the underlying literature, and neither gets to be quietly ignored because it's inconvenient. What that leaves you with is genuine uncertainty rather than a settled null result: the mere *presence* of a switched-off phone might drain a little of your working memory, or it might not drain anything measurable at all.
Why the advice still works anyway
Here is the part the debunk articles get wrong in the other direction.
Putting your phone in another room is still one of the most effective things you can do. Not because of an exotic cognitive mechanism. Because of a boring one: you cannot pick up a phone that is not within reach.
The problem was never the idle presence of the device. It is that a phone within arm's reach converts every moment of difficulty into a decision, and difficulty is exactly what studying is made of. You hit a paragraph you do not understand. There is a two-second window where continuing is unpleasant and checking is not. Distance removes the window.
That reframing matters practically. If the mechanism is mere presence, then face-down on the desk should be nearly as good as another room. If the mechanism is availability, it is not remotely as good, and the distance is the entire active ingredient.
Go with distance.
Where to actually put it
In descending order of how well they work:
- **Another room, charging.** The strongest version. The walk is the friction.
- **A bag with the zip closed, on the other side of the room.** Nearly as good, and better if you are in a library where leaving it is not an option.
- **Face down on the desk.** Weak. The phone is still two seconds away, which is the only distance that matters.
- **In your pocket.** This is not a system.
If you are studying somewhere you cannot leave a phone unattended, the bag-across-the-room version is the realistic ceiling. Put it in the bag before you start rather than when you notice yourself reaching, because by then the session is already broken.
Set up the interruption rules first
Most phone-checking during study is not craving. It is uncertainty. You do not know whether something needs you, so you keep checking in case.
Close that loop before you sit down:
- **iPhone** — Settings, then Focus, then create a Focus for studying. Allow calls from Favourites, and switch on Allow Repeated Calls so a genuine emergency rings through on a second attempt within three minutes.
- **Android** — Settings, then Digital Wellbeing, then Focus mode, paired with Do Not Disturb set to allow starred contacts and repeat callers.
Then tell the two or three people who might genuinely need you that you are unreachable for the next two hours and a repeat call gets through. That sentence does more for your concentration than any app, because it converts an open question into a closed one.
The timer is the boring part that works
Twenty-five minutes of work, five minutes off. The specific numbers matter far less than the existence of a defined end.
Difficulty is tolerable when it is bounded. "Study until you understand this" has no edge and your brain will go looking for an exit; "study until the timer goes" has an edge, and the exit is scheduled. Use the break for the phone if you want — a checked phone at a scheduled moment costs you almost nothing compared to a checked phone mid-paragraph.

What about studying on a laptop
The phone is the easy half. If your coursework lives on the same machine as your group chat, distance is not available to you and you need a software boundary instead.
Browser blockers are the practical answer. LeechBlock NG and StayFocusd are both free, and Cold Turkey Writer locks the machine to a blank page until you hit a word count, which is heavy-handed and occasionally exactly right.
Set the block list once, at a calm moment. A block list you edit mid-session is a block list that does nothing.
What to expect
The first two or three sessions feel worse, not better. Reaching for a phone that is not there is a real and slightly unpleasant sensation, and it is easy to read that as evidence the method is failing.
It passes within about a week. What tends to show up afterwards is not dramatically longer focus but noticeably faster restarts. The gap between sitting down and actually working shrinks, which over a term is worth more than any single long session.
If you want a number to work against rather than a feeling, run a baseline week first and look at pickups rather than total screen time. Pickups is the number that describes study interruption.
If none of it is holding
If you have removed the phone, closed the loops, set a timer, and still cannot start, the phone was probably not the binding constraint.
Persistent difficulty starting or sustaining work has plenty of causes that no amount of device hygiene will fix: sleep, anxiety, an undiagnosed attention difficulty, or a course you have quietly decided you do not want to do. If it is significantly affecting your studies, that is worth raising with a student support service or a doctor rather than escalating the blocking software. Nothing here is medical advice.
