What it actually does
Google describes Family Link as covering four things: daily screen time limits with School Time and Downtime schedules, per-app limits and app blocking, content controls across Chrome, Play, YouTube and Search, and location with arrival and departure alerts. It also helps manage the child's account itself — passwords, permissions, privacy settings.
That is the same feature list most paid parental-control subscriptions lead with. The difference is the price.
Why this page exists
Search "best parental control app" and you get ranked lists of subscriptions, because subscriptions pay commission and free built-in tools do not. How hard it is to escape
Firm. It is account-level and OS-level rather than an app sitting on top of the system, which makes it harder to defeat than a third-party blocker — a determined and technical teenager can still find ways around it, as they can with any of these.
Worth knowing: some controls behave differently once a child's account passes the age of majority in your country, and the account can be transitioned to an ordinary one at that point.
Where it falls down
**Android and Chrome, effectively.** The parent app is on iOS, but the enforcement is on Google's own platforms. If the child has an iPhone, Apple Screen Time is the built-in equivalent and Family Link is not a substitute.
**Reporting is thinner than paid tools.** You get activity and limits, not the AI-flagged alerting Bark sells. Whether that is a loss depends entirely on whether you want alerting at all — see should you monitor your teen's phone.
**It is a control tool, not a conversation.** No software substitutes for the agreement, which is the part that actually determines whether any of this holds.
Who it suits
Parents of Android-using children of any age, and specifically anyone about to pay for a subscription without having tried this first. If Family Link genuinely doesn't cover your situation, you will know within a fortnight, and you will know exactly which gap you are paying to close.
