The trial with the cleanest result

Researchers at Karl Landsteiner University published a randomised controlled trial in BMC Medicine in 2025, preregistered before it ran. They took 125 healthy students, mean age 22.7, whose baseline screen time averaged 276 minutes a day, and randomly assigned them either to cut screen time to two hours a day for three weeks or to carry on as normal. One hundred and eleven completed it.

The intervention group improved on all four measures the study tracked: depressive symptoms, sleep quality, wellbeing and perceived stress. Effect sizes were small to medium, and the differences against the control group were statistically significant on each.

The authors' own conclusion is that this suggests a causal relationship rather than a correlational one between daily screen time and mental health. That is a stronger claim than most of this literature supports, and it comes from a design that earns it: randomised, preregistered, with a control group.

Two caveats belong with it. The trial was not blinded, which is hard to avoid when the intervention is "use your phone less" and participants know which group they are in. And the sample was healthy young students, not a population with existing mental health problems, so it says nothing about treating those.

The one in teenagers

A second trial, published in Child and Adolescent Mental Health in 2026, ran a harder version with a younger group. Eighty-two UK adolescents aged 13 to 18 were randomly assigned to a total smartphone and social media detox for 21 days, the same detox with a basic phone available, or business as usual.

At 21 days, one or both detox groups showed improvements against controls in sleep duration, daytime sleepiness, depressive symptoms, perceived stress and working memory. The authors describe those as tentative, which is the right word for a pilot with 26 people in each detox arm.

Participants also reported boredom, functional reliance on the phone for things they actually needed it for, and fear of missing out. Eighty-three per cent of them thought the government should act on this. A detox that is difficult for the person doing it is not a failed detox, but it does tell you something about what a phone is currently carrying.

What both trials found about afterwards

The BMC Medicine authors report that screen time increased rapidly once the three weeks ended, and that by follow-up it was approaching its original level. The adolescent trial reports that the improvements measured at 21 days were not maintained at a two-month follow-up.

Different countries, different age groups, different designs, same result at the end. The behaviour returns, and the benefit returns with it.

This is not a reason to skip the detox. What it rules out is the version where three weeks off resets something and the change then holds by itself. Neither trial found that, and both were looking.

What a detox is actually for

Read together, the trials support a narrow claim confidently: reducing screen time causes short-term improvements in mood, sleep and stress. They support nothing about permanence.

That makes the detox useful as a demonstration. Most people cannot say whether their phone is affecting their sleep or their mood, because they have no comparison condition. Three weeks provides one. If you sleep better and feel better, you have learned something specific about your own phone that no statistic about other people can tell you.

The trials suggest treating the end of the detox as the actual intervention. What matters is which of the changes you made under the detox you keep afterwards, and that is a decision worth making in advance rather than on the last day. The rebound the researchers measured was the default, not a failure of willpower on the part of their participants.

If you want the demonstration, the challenges are structured as fixed windows for that reason, and a week of tracking first gives you the before-figure that makes the comparison mean anything.
